Offering Individually-Paced, Hands-on Education in a Prepared Environment

THE MONTESSORI PHILOSOPHY

Maria Montessori pioneered research in the field of early childhood education and developed specialized classroom methods to meet the needs of each child.

Miss J’s Montessori Preschool provides a comprehensive program for the development of intellectual, social and physical skills based on each child's
individual level.

Children are taught to respect the environment and materials, and to respect and care for others in school and at home. Teachers give instruction on an individual and small group basis.

All children may work at their own pace and develop varying skill levels in a comfortable, nurturing learning environment.

The primary goal of Miss J's Montessori is to build self confidence and independence With each child. This caring environment offers an opportunity to extend concentration and nurture a true love of learning.

THE MONTESSORI PROGRAM

The Montessori classroom is commonly referred to as a "prepared environment". The care and attention given to creating this special learning environment reinforces children's independence and intellectual development.

Miss J’s Montessori Preschool is a place where children work and learn with dignity and spontaneous enthusiasm. The class groups are always multi-aged, normally covering a three or four-year
span.

Each class in essentially a stable community, with only the oldest third moving on to the next level each year. At each level with Miss J’s Montessori Preschool, the curriculum and the methods are logical and consistent extensions of what has come before.

The Four Areas of Curriculum

Practical Life
Activities a child encounters in daily living, i.e., pouring, sponge squeezing, and buttoning. These exercises build self esteem.

Sensorial
Each sensorial material isolates one quality, such as size, volume, width, length, touch, temperature, weight, color, shape or sound. Repetition is encouraged to allow the child to achieve mastery.

Language
Children are immersed in language throughout the day at Miss J’s Montessori Preschool. They participate in conversations, songs, poems, stories and discussions.

Mathematics
Basic mathematical foundations of order, sequence, patterns, relationships, quantity and dimension are developed in the Practical Life and Sensorial areas. Now the child is ready to go on to add numerical value to the concepts already absorbed.
